Why do we need a Mayor elected by voters?
A Mayor elected by voters is the leader of the council chosen by you, as opposed to the leader being a councillor and chosen by the councillors.
It is a one-for-one swap.
So why do we need one?
In a word: prosperity.
The councillor-leader model has failed Plymouth. It has been in place for 26 years and Plymouth has failed to reach its potential.
Citizens feel disenfranchised.
Our economy has stalled, we have 30% of our population living in poverty, no airport and Plymouth City Council is rapidly moving towards £1 billion in debt.
Directly elected leaders are proven to drive prosperity for all because of more democracy, more accountability, more talent and more economic growth due to the democratic legitimacy of office.
There are now 27 Mayors in England, pushing their cities forward with prosperity. And this number is growing.
Let's join them!
